Obtaining a certificate of No Marriage
A Zimbabwean wishing to marry a foreigner is required to obtain a certificate of no marriage or no impediment from the Registrar of Marriages. This also applies to a Zimbabwean wishing to marry abroad. The said certificate confirms that there is no record of that Zimbabwean having been married. The certificate will be valid for a defined period e.g. six months from the date of issue. By obtaining this certificate, one avoids the embarrassment and inconvenience of marrying someone who may still be legally married to someone else. It should be noted that even where a couple has been separated for many years, the separation on its own does not dissolve the marriage. One has to obtain a divorce order in order to dissolve the marriage. An applicant wishing to obtain a certificate of no impediment is required to provide certified copies of the following.

  1. A copy of their birth certificate,
  2. A copy of the information page in their passport.
  3. The last stamped page of their passport.
  4. Letter authorizing a lawyer to act on applicant`s behalf (if application is going to be handled by a lawyer)
  5. Payment to the registrar of Marriages (Currently $35.00)

What Our Customers Say

Legal Practitioners of Choice

Some years ago, my recording label had a commercial dispute with another recording label. The matter was referred to the High Court of Zimbabwe. During the hearing, the other recording label was represented by Kanokanga & Partners which impressed me with its professionalism and advocacy. Needless to say, my recording label lost the case. From that time I dumped my then lawyers and engaged Kanokanga & Partners as my new lawyers. Since then, Kanokanga & Partners have remained my legal practitioners of choice. Working with them is such a joy.
