Guide to the Victoria Falls International Arbitration Centre

The history of arbitration in Zimbabwe can be traced back to British annexation, occupation and later colonisation. Nonetheless, arbitration has continued to grow throughout Zimbabwe particularly after the country gained Independence on 18 April 1980. see Davison Kanokanga, Commercial Arbitration in Zimbabwe (Juta & Co, Cape Town, 2020).

A significant feature of the current arbitral regime in Zimbabwe is that it gave effect to domestic and international arbitration in Zimbabwe on 13 September 1996 and adopted with modifications, the Model Law on International Commercial Arbitration as adopted by the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (“UNCITRAL”) on 21 June 1985 and the recent judicial pronouncements on arbitration in the country are viewed as being pro-arbitration. see Prince Kanokanga, ‘25 Years of UNCITRAL Model Law in Zimbabwe’ (2022) University of Zimbabwe Students Law Review 147 – 187.
