Independent Schools

Section 9 of the Education Act [Chapter 25:04] (“the Act”) deals with the classification of schools. In Zimbabwe, schools are classified as either Government Schools or non-Government schools. Furthermore, section 2 of the Act defines a “school” to mean a pre-school, primary school or secondary school.

An independent school is considered a non-Government school in Zimbabwe. The National Employment Council (NEC) for the Welfare and Educational Institutions in Zimbabwe recognises eight (8) types of independent schools in the country, namely:

• Independent A – Trust Schools

• Independent B – Private Schools

• Independent C – Private Colleges

• Independent D – Home Schools A

• Independent D – Home Schools B

• Independent E – Boarding

• Independent F – Day Urban

• Independent F – Day Urban
