Mediation: Zimbabwe’s Milestone

On the 30 th May 2022 the Convention on the Establishment of the International Organisation for Mediation was signed in Hong Kong. Zimbabwe is one of the few States that signed or endorsed the Joint Statement on the Future Establishment of the International Organisation for Mediation.

On the 18 th March 2025 Cabinet, which is the executive branch of the Zimbabwe government, considered and approved the signing of the Convention on the Establishment of International Organisation for Mediation (IOMed). The Convention is spearheaded by the People’s Republic of China which is the first intergovernmental international legal organisation dedicated to resolving international disputes through mediation.

IOMed serves as the initial milestone of creating an international organisation for mediation. Its aim is to promote peaceful and friendly settlement of international disputes and contribute to building harmonious disputes and contribute to building harmonious international relations.

The IOMed has a Governing Council which is the decision-making body charged with the responsibility to make policy decisions and set the overall strategy of the Organization. The Governing Council is composed of one representative of each Contracting State. Zimbabwe is a signatory to IOMed.
